Interview with SIPA MPA candidate, Danielle Schlanger COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Name: Danielle Schlanger Degree: MPA Concentration: Urban and Social Policy Specialization: International media, advocacy, and communication Danielle is a second-year SIPA student pursuing an MPA degree with a concentration in Urban and Social Policy. During her time at SIPA, Danielle has written for The Morningside Post, the schools newspaper, and has interned for CNBC in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. This summer, she worked in the Huffington Posts politics bureau in Washington, D.C. Before enrolling at SIPA, Danielle worked at the New York County District Attorneys Office as a paralegal in the offices Public Integrity Unit. She graduated with a degree in Urban and Regional Studies from Cornell University in 2010. What did you do before coming to SIPA? I graduated college in 2010, so I was one of the younger members of the class of 2014. After graduating from college, I worked as a paralegal at the New York County District Attorney’s Office in lower Manhattan. As an undergraduate I thought I wanted to become a prosecutor, but after working at the DA’s office I realized public policy and journalism was a better fit for me. What attracted you to SIPA? I was drawn to SIPA for two reasons: the location and the flexibility in the curriculum. As an aspiring journalist, I wanted to be in New York City for graduate school. There is an enormous media market here, and being able to intern while taking classes was important to me. I worked at CNBC during my first semester at SIPA, and I hope to freelance for some of the City’s papers during my second-year. SIPA also allowed me to combine my interest in public policy and journalism pretty seamlesslythe IMAC curriculum is fantastic. What kind of work do you hope to do when you graduate? Following graduation, I hope to work as a writer for a print/online news outlet covering domestic politics. Working at the Huffington Post this summer reaffirmed this for meI couldn’t have had a better experience working in their Politics bureau.    My experience at SIPA has really equipped me to better understand some of the most pressing issues facing society today, and how policymakers are able to work with the public to form solutions.

Application Essay Tips and Tricks At this point in the summer, you’re probably getting close to being halfway done with your summer break. Before you know it, the Fall 2019 application is going to open! Yeswe do in fact read each and every essay that is submitted with the application. The best thing you can start to do now is prepare so this isn’t you once the application opens Tip #1 Start Preparing Now Yes, I know it’s still summer break. However, the essay is already posted on our website here and isn’t going to change before the application opens on September 1.  Take a look, and start to formulate your plan. Brainstorm what you are going to tell us â€" focus on why you are interested in the major you chose. If you are choosing the Division of General Studies, tells us about your passions, your career goals, or the different paths you are interested in exploring. Tip #2 Be Concise The application essay is only 300-400 words long, so do your best to stay focused and answer the question that were asking of you! Do your best to stay on topic and maximize the 400 words you have been allotted to let us know about your passions and interests. Tip #3 Be Yourself This is your one chance to tell us about yourself on the application â€"make it unique to you and your experiences. Every college has different essays and while they may be similar, dont copy and paste! Tip #4 Proofread Regardless of how great and interesting your essay is, having spelling errors or run-on sentences lessens the effect it may have. Take your time and proofread it at least once on your own before hitting the submit button. Tip#5 Proofread again After you proofread it yourself, give it to someone else to proofread for you as well â€" a teacher, friend, parent, or guardian. Two sets of eyes are always better than one! Are You, Guilty by Suspicion? (Movie Review) nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;The movie Guilty by Suspicion was not your average â€Å"action-packed† Matrix. In this movie, David Merrill (played by Robert DeNiro,) is a successful director. Everything seems to be fine, until his past starts catching up with him. Now he’s wanted for possibly being a Communist. As boring as this would sound to the average teenager, I actually liked it. Take for example the scene where he first sees his son. He gave him a brand new toy car and you could clearly see he loved his little boy. I liked this scene because it showed Mr. Merrill was a considerate and caring person†¦not a cold, raging beast. In another part of the movie when his friend Red had a sort of†¦show more content†¦This again showed how he cared for the ones whom he held close, even if they weren’t there for him during his hard times. Another powerful scene that I liked was at the end of the movie during his hearing. Mr. Merrill came off as a strong man w ho would not back down on his word. He showed that doing things such as holding a meeting about how to end the atomic bomb, does not make one a Communist. He never ratted out any of his friends (despite the fact that at times they wanted to drag his name through the mud). Many peoples’ lives were ruined because they were being blamed for things in which they were not guilty of. This lesson can also be seen in the book The Crucible. The search for Communists was much like that in the Salem Massachusetts during the time of the Salem Witch Trials. In this book, much like in Guilty by Suspicion, people were thrown in jail and lives were ruined when they really were NOT guilty. Also, during this time period, you could be accused of being a witch without hardcore evidence, just like in the movie. Another reason they are similar is the fact that â€Å"names† played a major role. The court wanted names of people who attended certain meetings or suspects that could be communist s. The same goes for The Crucible. The Start of Evil Macbeth is a play written by William Shakespeare in the 1600 century. It is one of Shakespeare’s most well known tragedies, and continues to be studied to this day. It is a dark and gloomy play, as the main character, Macbeth, gets a taste for evil and kills the king of Scotland, King Duncan, in order to become king himself. After this moment there is a rapid increase of evil in him, as he starts to kill more and more people who upset him or are a threat to the throne. One of the play’s most important scenes is when Macbeth murders King Duncan, this scene is essential to the remainder of the play and how it unfolds. This murder scene contributes to the play in terms of plot development, it exposes and develops the†¦show more content†¦He sends murderers over to MacDuff’s house to murder his, â€Å"wife, children, servants, all that could be found† (IV.III.210-215). He kills like it doesn’t mean anything, and believes that it is the solution to all his problems. This killing spree can all be traced back to the moment when he killed Duncan, from that point on Macbeth changed. The characters of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth evolve significantly throughout the play. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a courageous soldier who was rewarded with becoming Thane of Cawdor, however evolved to become evil through the witches’ prophecies and by Lady Macbeth’s persuasion for him to take the throne. Lady Macbeth questions his masculinity by asking him whether he is a man, â€Å"When you durst do it, then you were a man† (I.VII.49). Through the strong power of Lady Macbeth’s influence on Macbeth she is able to pressure him to do what her bidding. Meanwhile, across town another twelve year old young lady tries to arrive to school ready to learn, she is detoured by her raging mother mad because clothes are not folded properly in their place. The sobbing pre-teen will be coerced to go to school and, the one with family problems finally arrives thirty minutes late finishing her homework on the car ride all the while mother has yet to halt the abuse. Unknowingly these social differences result in catastrophe. So we ignore the common variables within our family that make bullies and define the bullied. With their physical needs relatively satisfied, the individual’s safety needs take precedence and dominate behavior. 2. In the absence of physical safety – due to war, natural disaster, or, in cases of family violence, childhood abuse, etc. – people experience post-traumatic stress disorder. 3. This level is more likely to be found in children because they have a greater need to feel safe. C. Love and Belongingness, such as emotional intimacy, friendships, and social connections. 1. After physiological and safety needs are fulfilled, the third layer of human needs are interpersonal and involve feelings of belongingness. 2. People have an emotional need that they need to fulfill, and without this there will be a gap in the persons psychological wellbeing. D. Esteem Needs, such as the need for the respect of one’s peers, status, or approval. 1. All humans have a need to be respected and to have self-esteem and self-respect. 2. People need to engage themselves to gain recognition and have an activity or activities that give the person a sense of contribution, to feel self-valued, be it in a profession or hobby. E. Last, but not least, Self-Actualization, which is the fulfillment of ones individual potential. 1. Since no two people are exactly alike, the drive for self-actualization leads people in different directions. . For some, self-actualization may mean creating works of art; for others, striving on the playing field, in the classroom, or in the corporate setting. 3. Not all of us climb to the top of the hierarchy; we don’t all achieve self-actualization. II. However, our needs may not be ordered in a fixed manner, as Maslow would suggest. A. An artist might go for days with little if any nourishment in order to compl ete a new work. B. People may limit constrain their social life to focus their energies on seeking status or prestige in their careers. C. Maslow might counter that eventually the emptiness of their emotional lives would motivate them to fill the gap. D. Despite its limitations, Maslow’s model leads us to recognize that human behavior is motivated by higher pursuits as well as satisfaction of basic needs. This means that in order to actually attain happiness, a person must achieve psychological, as well as physical needs to the fullest extent of their capabilities. A. Most of us college students are in the Esteem level. 1. We all have our group of friends that we meet up with after class, or on the weekends. . And we are working on this college degree, which would one day hopefully lead us to a satisfying career. 3. What are we here for? We are here to gain prestige and achieve as much as we can to prove to others and ourselves that we are fulfilling our potential. B. When we get that position we are looking for or have a job that brings status as well as stability to our lives, then we can move on to achieving the highest level of happiness. 1. After you start a family and have a stable career to support your family with, you can begin to look for the next level of the hierarchy. 2. That next level of hierarchy is actually realizing that you are at that level. 3. Looking back at your life realizing that you have all the other levels satisfied brings peace to your mind. 4. Bringing yourself to the highest level you can as a human being, or fulfilling your potential is what brings you that ultimate happiness. 5. Knowing that you did the most you can, as a human being will allow you relax and achieve that happiness. 6. After all, all this work and efforts your putting into school is really just in order to reach a point in life where you are satisfied with what you have done.
